Day Trips From Lauterbrunnen: Over the Ridge, Down the Valley, Up to the Top

The Wengernalpbahn, the longest continuous rack railway in the world, runs Lauterbrunnen to Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg and on down to Grindelwald, full line opened 20 June 1893. Kleine Scheidegg at 1,983 m is the junction itself, worth a stop for the close-up view of the Eiger's north wall even without continuing to the Jungfraujoch. Männlichen sits on the ridge above Wengen, reached by gondola from either Wengen or Grindelwald, and is the start of the Royal Walk toward Kleine Scheidegg. From Grindelwald, the Eiger Express gondola reaches the Jungfraujoch's Grindelwald Terminal in 45 minutes, the fastest route to the summit from that side.

Getting There

The Wengernalpbahn rack railway runs from Lauterbrunnen up through Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, then down the other side to Grindelwald. The full line opened on 20 June 1893 and it is the longest continuous rack railway in the world. You can ride it as a round trip or break it at Kleine Scheidegg for the view before continuing.

What It Costs Once There

Two tickets cover most Grindelwald days. The Grindelwald First gondola is $87.00 for a self-guided round trip, and access to the First Cliff Walk is included, with the First Flyer zipline, Mountain Cart, First Glider and Scooter Bike sold as extras once you are up the mountain. The operator sells the same round-trip ticket at its own station in Grindelwald without a booking fee either way, so the price is identical at the gate. The second is the Grindelwald Glacier Canyon ticket at $25.00, also self-guided, including the canyon walkways and the Crystal Museum.

Transport to the gate is not included, so plan for the walk or the local bus from the village. The canyon sells this same ticket at its own gate at the same posted price.

Kleine Scheidegg and Männlichen

Kleine Scheidegg sits at 1,983 m and is the junction stop on the same rack line, where trains from Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald meet before the Jungfrau Railway climbs on from there. Männlichen sits higher, at 2,229 m, reached by gondola from Wengen or from the Grindelwald side, and it is the start of the Royal Walk viewpoint path. Neither stop has a published standalone fare in the sources we checked.

Interlaken

Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen runs on the Berner Oberland Bahn, roughly 20 to 22 minutes, about 32 trains a day, and it is the rail hub most guided day trips in the region start from. The guided Jungfraujoch day from Interlaken at $315.00 is a 7-hour coach and rail trip that crosses to Grindelwald Terminal, rides the cable car to Eiger Glacier and the cogwheel train up to the Jungfraujoch, and returns through Lauterbrunnen. The Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch sits at 3,454 m, the highest railway station in Europe. The Jungfrau Railway has run up from Kleine Scheidegg since 1912, 9 km almost entirely in tunnel through the Eiger and the Mönch. Return tickets are advertised from US$157.50 (CHF 129.60) for the lowest fare class, and the full fare is higher and changes with the date and your starting station.

Interlaken is about 20 to 22 minutes down the Berner Oberland Bahn from Lauterbrunnen, and it is where most of the coach and minibus tours on Lauterbrunnen tours begin. Obersteinberg sits at the head of the Lauterbrunnen valley, reached entirely on foot rather than by rail or cable car. J.R.R. Tolkien walked this route from Interlaken through Lauterbrunnen and Mürren to the head of the valley in 1911, and his own 1967 letter (Letter 306) ties Bilbo's journey from Rivendell over the Misty Mountains to that walk. His name is recorded in the guest book of the Berghaus at Obersteinberg.
