Stechelberg sits at the base of the Schwarzmönch mountain in the Bernese Alps, in the Lauterbrunnen district, and it marks the practical end of the Lauterbrunnen valley for anyone in a car. This is not a place you come to for a long list of attractions. Come with the right expectation and it does exactly what you need.

It is the last point reachable by private vehicle up the valley, the turn-around point for the Postbus route from Lauterbrunnen, and above all the valley station of the Schilthorn aerial cableway. Almost everyone you see here is either parking a car, waiting for a gondola, or stepping off one. The Weisse Lütschine river runs close by the cableway station, crossed by a footbridge, and the valley walls rise steeply on both sides.

Beyond the village the valley narrows into walking country, with trails heading toward the Oberhornsee lake inside the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. If you want cafés, shops and viewpoints, stay in Lauterbrunnen or ride up to Mürren instead. If you want to park, board, or start a quiet valley walk, Stechelberg is exactly the right spot.

By Road

Stechelberg is reachable by road year-round. Drivers leave the motorway at the Wilderswil/Interlaken exit and follow the road through Lauterbrunnen, a drive of about 20 minutes from the exit to the head of the valley. The road simply stops at Stechelberg, which is why the village works as a hinge point.

Parking is at the valley station and runs on a pay-and-display system. You take a ticket at the barrier, pay at the machine before returning to your car, and then reinsert the paid ticket to exit. By Rail And Postbus

Without a car, take the train toward Lauterbrunnen and change at Interlaken Ost. Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen is a short ride up the valley, and at Lauterbrunnen station you step directly onto a Postbus that runs up the valley floor to the Schilthorn cableway valley station at Stechelberg. The connection, detailed on Interlaken to Lauterbrunnen, is the standard way every non-driving visitor arrives, and the Postbus stop sits right at the cableway base, so there is no walk to plan between bus and gondola.

The same bus serves Trümmelbach Falls on the way up the valley, which makes it easy to combine a falls stop with a cableway ride in one trip. Check return bus times before you commit to a late descent, because the valley bus is the only public road link back to Lauterbrunnen and the trains beyond.

The Cableway From Here

The Schilthornbahn aerial cableway is the reason most people come. Departures from Stechelberg run every 30 minutes, and the full ride to the Schilthorn summit takes 24 minutes by the operator's own figure. The line stops at intermediate stations on the way up, including Birg, where the Skyline Walk and Thrill Walk sit.

Holders of a Swiss Half Fare Card pay US$69.90 (CHF 57.50) from Stechelberg, and Swiss Travel Pass or GA holders pay US$55.50 (CHF 45.70).
