Lauterbrunnen in One Day: Two Timed Plans for the Valley

The BOB train from Interlaken Ost is direct and takes 22 minutes, roughly 32 trains a day. If you drive, the Parkhaus garage under the station has 974 spaces, opens 24/7 and charges CHF 18 per 8-hour block. The Postbus to Stechelberg and the cableway to Murren both leave from the station area, so this is your one logistics hub for the day.

Buy the Trummelbach entry at the falls, not here, there is no need. Grab cash and layers now because the next seven hours give you few chances.

The fall drops 297 m from a hanging valley over the village and breaks into spray, which is what staub, dust, means in German. Goethe stood here in 1779 and wrote a poem about it. There is no gate and no opening hours, and a paved path leads from the main street.

Come early because tour groups thicken from mid-morning. The path gets damp near the base, so a rain shell earns its place in your bag. Twenty minutes here is enough before the bus.

Ten glacier waterfalls carry meltwater from the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau through the inside of the mountain, partly reached by a tunnel lift. At peak melt up to 20,000 litres a second pour through. The site opens daily from the beginning of April to the beginning of November, 09:00-17:00, extended to 08:30-18:00 in July and August.

No booking is needed, you pay at the gate. Children under 4 and dogs are not admitted. The Postbus toward Stechelberg drops you close by, about 3 km up the valley.

Allow 60-75 minutes inside.

Line 141 runs from Lauterbrunnen to Stechelberg in 14 minutes, and from Trummelbach you rejoin it heading the same way. Stechelberg is the valley station of the Schilthorn cableway, which climbs via Gimmelwald, Murren and Birg. The village itself sits quietly at the head of the road and most day visitors walk straight through it, which is a shame if you have ten spare minutes.

Check the cableway departure clock when you arrive, because ascents run hourly at xx:25 and xx:55.

The cableway takes about 30 minutes to the summit with changes along the way. At the top, the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant opened in 1969, and the Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service was filmed here that same year. Your ticket includes Bond World, the 007 Walk of Fame, the Thrill Walk at Birg and the Skyline Walk.

Half Fare holders pay US$69.90 (CHF 57.50). The operator quotes a visit at 2-5 hours, and for this plan you take the lower end, about two hours including lunch at the restaurant. Weather can close the upper section without notice, so have the free-day plan in your pocket as a backup.

Break the descent at Murren, at 1,638 m and home to about 430 people, or at Gimmelwald at 1,364 m with roughly 109 residents. Both villages are car-free and reached only by cableway or the Grütschalp railway. A 20-30 minute stop gives you the village street, the viewpoint and a coffee without wrecking your afternoon.

If you hold only a Stechelberg-Murren return instead of the full summit ticket, this stop costs nothing extra at all.

The Postbus returns you to the station in 14 minutes, and the BOB train takes 22 minutes back to Interlaken Ost. If you started from Zurich, allow 2 hours 24 minutes to 2 hours 37 minutes with two changes, so leave Lauterbrunnen no later than late afternoon for a sane arrival. Start where the village does. The church dates from 1487-1488, built by the villagers as a filial church, and it anchors a street that runs flat along the valley floor. Staubbach Falls drops 297 m overhead with a paved path leading toward it from the main street, free, no gate, no hours.

The valley claims 72 waterfalls in total, and the name Lauterbrunnen itself comes from the many loud springs. Morning light hits the fall's spray from the east side of the street.

PostAuto line 141 runs the length of the valley floor to Stechelberg in 14 minutes. Walking the same road takes considerably longer, our estimate is over an hour each way, so most visitors ride at least one direction. The cliffs on both sides carry fall after fall, and the road stays level, which makes this one of the easiest scenic walks in Switzerland if your legs are willing.

This is the only paid entry on the whole plan and it is worth every franc. The Trummelbach drains 24 square kilometres of glacier catchment, about half snow and ice, and was first made accessible in 1877. In winter only a trickle runs under ice, but in the melt season up to 20,000 litres a second thunder through the galleries.

Ride the last few minutes of line 141 to Stechelberg, the small village at the end of the valley road at the foot of the Schilthorn cableway. It sees a fraction of the traffic that hits Lauterbrunnen at lunchtime, because everyone else is in a cable car queue. Prices for the village restaurants are not stated in our sources, so budget as you would anywhere in the Jungfrau Region and carry some cash.

The first stop up the Stechelberg cableway is Gimmelwald, at 1,364 m with about 109 residents, entirely car-free. One stop costs a single fare and gives you a village street, cows, a viewpoint over the valley and no crowds worth the name. If you would rather not spend, skip this stop and take the bus straight back, because the valley floor already gave you the views the village looks down on.

Ride down and catch the bus back to the station, 14 minutes, or walk the last stretch along the valley road if your feet still work. The 22-minute BOB train to Interlaken Ost closes the day.
