Wengen Restaurants: Where the Village Eats

The village venues named on the official directory

Wengen Tourism's own gastronomy directory runs to 28 entries, and beyond the two hotels covered above the visible list names Alpine Herb Restaurant Bären, Après Ski Bar Hasenstall, Bar Anonymous, Braunbärbar, Goldlöckchen Restaurant, Hotel and Restaurant Jungfrau Wengernalp, Jack's Brasserie at Hotel Regina, Judy's Restaurant at Hotel Bellevue, La Bulle at Hotel Regina, Lecker Asia, and Restaurant Berghaus. The directory also lists the Grindelwaldblick mountain lodge at Kleine Scheidegg and the Männlichen mountain lodge, both covered in the mountain section below. The names alone tell you the shape of the village: several hotel dining rooms clustered around the station, a handful of bars for the après-ski hours, and one Asian option at Lecker Asia.

Why we stop at the names

We could have padded this page with invented menus and guessed hours for each of those venues. We did not, because on this check no official source publishes opening days, hours or menu prices for any of them, and this site only states facts it can trace. If you want to compare them yourself, the Wengen Tourism directory is the single list to work from, and hotel reception desks in a car-free village of this size are used to walk-in questions at dinner time.

Bergrestaurant Kleine Scheidegg

Bergrestaurant Kleine Scheidegg sits at 2,061 m exactly where the rack railways from Grindelwald and from Lauterbrunnen and Wengen meet, so it is the easiest big-view lunch in the area: one Wengernalpbahn ride up, no hiking required. The operator's own menu highlights are the Röstizza, a rösti and pizza hybrid, the Scheidegg-Burger, Jungfrau-Bratwürste straight off the grill, Gulaschsuppe for cold days, and Crèmeschnitten supplied by the Confiserie Eigergletscher, which the same railway company calls Europe's highest-altitude confectionery. The sun terrace faces the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, which is the reason most tables are outside on a clear day.

Berghaus Männlichen

Berghaus Männlichen stands right next to the cableway mountain station at Männlichen, which from Wengen means one ride up the Wengen-Männlichen aerial cableway and you are at the door. The operator's own site describes regional specialities served with views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and the house is run by a named couple, Daniela and Ruedi Stalder-Kaufmann, which in a valley of anonymous hotel kitchens is worth noting. Reservations are taken, by phone on +41 33 853 10 68 or by email at [email protected], and given that the whole summit plateau funnels lunch crowds through one building, booking ahead on a fine summer day is the sensible move.

The only confirmed supermarket in Wengen

Coop Supermarkt Wengen sits at Wengiboden 1347, 3823 Wengen, and its own store locator lists daily opening hours of 08:00 to 18:30, with the phone number +41 33 856 21 80. That makes it simple to plan: buy picnic supplies in the morning or before 18:30, then carry them up on the cableway or eat on a bench along the hiking trails above the village. We also checked the negative finding, because it changes how you shop: neither Migros's own store locator nor Volg's returns a store in Wengen, so Coop is the only supermarket chain with a confirmed branch in the village.

If you are stocking a holiday apartment for a week, do one big shop down in the valley and use the Wengen Coop for top-ups. Our supermarkets guide compares all three valley villages. The same freight logic that applies in Murren applies here: a train, not a truck, restocks this shelf, so do not expect valley-floor prices on everything.
