Schilthorn Tickets and Cable Car Prices: Every Fare, Pass and Tour Compared

The Schilthornbahn publishes one tariff that covers every fare class on the line, and it is the source for every figure in this table. It is valid to 12.12.2026, after which a new rate sheet applies. The two columns matter because the same trip costs less if you join at Mürren, high above the valley, rather than riding the full chain from Stechelberg.

Note that the discounted early departure fare and the seasonal holiday pass have conditions attached: the brunch fare demands a departure by 08:51, and the holiday pass runs only from 1 May to 31 October 2026 and is sold for trips starting in Mürren.

Every published fare, both starting points

Reading the ladder

Two things stand out. First, the Half Fare column is exactly half the adult column, which is why the from US$73.32 figure on the Viator listing for the Schilthorn - Piz Gloria ticket looks so much lower than the headline fare. That advertised figure is the Swiss Half Fare option, not the normal adult return of US$139.70 (CHF 115) from Stechelberg, and it only applies if you carry a valid Swiss Half Fare card.

Second, the brunch fare costs more than the standard return, not less. The US$151.90 (CHF 125) from Stechelberg and US$128.80 (CHF 106) from Mürren are fares that include brunch, so you are buying a meal on top of the ride, with the condition that you depart by 08:51. If you only want the cable car, the standard return is the cheaper of the two.

Getting to the valley station in the first place

If you start in Lauterbrunnen village rather than Stechelberg, the tariff prices the trip via the Grütschalp route: Lauterbrunnen-Schilthorn return is US$139.70 (CHF 115), and from Interlaken it is US$164.30 (CHF 135.20). Those figures bundle the train or funicular leg with the cableway. Three pass families cut the Schilthorn cable car price sharply, and one of them removes it entirely. The question is never whether a pass helps. It is whether the pass is worth buying for this trip alone. Our arithmetic below answers that, and our tickets hub compares the regional passes across the whole area.

The Swiss Travel Pass and the GA both bring the Schilthorn return down to US$55.50 (CHF 45.70) from either Stechelberg or Mürren. Against the US$139.70 (CHF 115) standard fare from Stechelberg, our sum is a saving of US$84.20 (CHF 69.30) per adult return. A Swiss Travel Pass is expensive, so it only pays if you are using it across many journeys over several days. If you already hold one, the answer is simple: use it and pay the discounted US$55.50 (CHF 45.70) at the ticket desk. The same discounted fare also covers the Stechelberg-Mürren section on its own, which normally costs US$14.34 (CHF 11.80) single.

The Berner Oberland Pass is the standout. The tariff lists the Schilthorn trip at 0.00 for pass holders, from either direction, and it covers the Stechelberg-Mürren cableway free as well. If a Berner Oberland Pass is already on your shopping list for the wider region, the Schilthorn effectively rides along at no extra cost.

Eurail pass holders get a middle tier: US$105.00 (CHF 86.40) from Stechelberg and US$83.40 (CHF 68.60) from Mürren. Our sum says that against the standard fare the saving from Stechelberg is US$34.80 (CHF 28.60). That is real money but not transformational, so Eurail holders should not buy the pass for the Schilthorn alone.

The Swiss Half Fare card works differently. It halves the fare exactly, to US$69.90 (CHF 57.50) from Stechelberg. The card has an annual cost that we do not print here because it sits outside the Schilthornbahn tariff, so the usual advice holds: Half Fare pays off over a Swiss holiday with many rail trips, not a single cable car ride.

The Jungfrau Travel Pass covers the other great railway of the region, the Jungfraujoch line, and is compared directly with the Schilthorn trip in our Schilthorn or Jungfraujoch guide. The Schilthornbahn tariff does not list a Jungfrau Travel Pass fare for this cableway, so check with the operator before assuming any coverage.

One warning applies to every discounted fare. The Half Fare, GA and Swiss Travel Pass rates apply only with the physical or digital card in your hand when you buy or board. Arrive without it and you pay the standard fare. Nobody at the ticket window will sell you a discounted ticket on a promise of a card waiting at the hotel.

The Schilthorn cable car is not one lift but a chain of them, and one ticket covers the whole journey. You board at Stechelberg in the valley floor, change at Gimmelwald, change again at Mürren, then ride via the Birg mid-station to the summit at 2,970 m. The most famous stretch is the first. The operator's own site describes the new Stechelberg-Mürren cabin as the steepest cable car in the world, at a gradient of 159.4%. Read that claim carefully: it is about that one section only, the jump from the valley floor to the cliff-edge village of Mürren, not the whole line to the summit. It is still a remarkable opening act, especially in the first and last cabins where the views are widest.

Plan around maintenance if you travel in late October. The Stechelberg-Gimmelwald-Mürren cableway closes from 19 to 30 October 2026 for scheduled work. During that window a shuttle bus runs via Mürren from 08:00 to 18:00 with limited seats, so expect queues and reduced capacity on the way up. The same section closes again from 26 April to 7 May 2027. Separately, the Mürren-Allmendhubel funicular, which is not part of the Schilthorn chain but sits at the Mürren changeover point, is closed from 19 October to 11 December 2026. Its normal return fare is US$19.44 (CHF 16) if you want it later in the season.

The Stechelberg-Mürren section can also be bought on its own, and many walkers do exactly that. A single costs US$14.34 (CHF 11.80) and a return US$28.70 (CHF 23.60). It is free for GA and Swiss Travel Pass holders and free with the Berner Oberland Pass. If you would rather walk one way between Stechelberg and Mürren and ride the other, the return ticket buys that flexibility.
