Paragliding Over Lauterbrunnen and Mürren

The single most useful thing to understand about paragliding at this end of the valley is that the two operators sell different products, not the same flight at two prices.

Airtime Paragliding's own site states it launches from Mürren itself. You meet near the Schilthornbahn station in Mürren, clip into the tandem harness and run off the launch field, with the ground dropping away onto the valley below. The classic product is The Wall, and the extended version is Double Airtime, which gives you more minutes in the air over the same route. Both land at the bottom of the Lauterbrunnen valley, at Stechelberg, so your return journey starts from the valley floor rather than back in Mürren.

Switzerland Paragliding's own site states its tandem starts much higher. In summer the tandem launches from Birg at 2,700 m, a station on the Schilthornbahn above Mürren. In winter the launch moves down to Schilgrat at 2,200 m. From either point the flight crosses past Gimmelwald, over Mürren and the Trümmelbach Falls before landing at Stechelberg. The total experience runs two hours from the meeting point to landing, which includes the ride up, the walk to launch and the flight itself.

The practical consequence is the same for both: you have to be at the launch point under your own steam, and the launch point sits above the valley floor. That means a lift ticket, and neither operator's own price covers it. More on that in the section on reaching the launch point.

Switzerland Paragliding publishes clear limits. The minimum age is 6 years. The weight window runs from a minimum of 30 kg to a maximum of 115 kg, and there is a scheduling rule on top: passengers over 90 kg can only fly on the 11:20, 13:20 or 15:20 slots. The platform listing for the Paragliding Panorama tandem flight states the same 30 kg to 115 kg window and adds that there is no refund for missing the over-90 kg slot rule, so weigh this before you book rather than at the launch field.

Airtime Paragliding is different. Its own page, as fetched for this guide, publishes no age limit and no weight limit. That is a gap in the information the operator provides, and it would be wrong to borrow Switzerland Paragliding's numbers and apply them to a different company with different gear and different pilots. If your weight or your children's ages are close to any boundary, ask Airtime directly before booking. Note that the GetYourGuide listing for the same Wall flight does state a 5-year minimum age and flags that it is not suitable for people over 200 lbs, so read the listing terms carefully.

Neither operator's fetched page states whether photos or video are included in the price, so assume they cost extra until you have asked.

The lift ticket point applies to both. Switzerland Paragliding states plainly that gondola and lift tickets to the launch are not included in the flight price. Airtime's launch in Mürren likewise requires you to have traveled up on the cableway out of your own pocket. One nuance on the Switzerland Paragliding side: the priced platform listing for the Panorama flight says the cable car ride to the takeoff point is included, which differs from the operator's own site. If that matters to your budget, confirm at booking which version of the terms applies.

Both launches sit in officially car-free territory. Wengen and Mürren are car-free villages, reachable only by public transport, on foot or by bike, so a visitor heading to either launch point already needs a train or cableway fare on top of the flight price.

For the Airtime flights, you need to get yourself to Mürren. The Stechelberg-Mürren cableway carries you up from the valley floor and costs CHF 11.80 single ($14.34) or CHF 23.60 return ($28.70). The ride is free with a Swiss Travel Pass or a Berner Oberland Pass, which matters if you are already holding either pass.

For the Switzerland Paragliding flights you go higher. The Schilthornbahn climbs past Mürren toward the Schilthorn, and Birg is a station on the way up. A return ticket from Stechelberg costs US$139.70 (CHF 115). In summer you ride to Birg at 2,700 m, in winter to Schilgrat at 2,200 m, and the platform listing describes a 10-minute hike from the cableway to the launch point. Factor that walk, and the fact you will land at Stechelberg and not where you started, into your timing.

The two routes show you different slices of the valley.

The Airtime flight from Mürren carries you over the Lauterbrunnen cliffs and waterfalls, which is exactly what the listing promises. You launch from the village itself, so the first moments put the sheer rock walls of the valley directly beneath you before you descend to the landing field at the bottom.

The Switzerland Paragliding route is longer in the air and starts higher. From Birg or Schilgrat the flight passes over Gimmelwald, then Mürren, then the Trümmelbach Falls, the famous waterfall system inside the mountain, before landing at Stechelberg. If seeing Trümmelbach Falls from above is your priority, this is the flight that does it. If you would rather visit the falls at ground level afterward, the landing at Stechelberg puts you close to the entrance.

The two listings differ on the small print that decides whether a flight fits your group. The Wall caps its tandem group at 6 participants and runs in English, German, Spanish and French. Its meeting point is given as Bei der Schilthornbahn, 3825 Muerren, right at the cableway station. The Paragliding Panorama flight caps its group at 9 participants and runs in Spanish, English, Polish and German, meeting in Muerren itself at the 3825 Lauterbrunnen postal address, before the cable car ride up to Birg or Schilgrat.

Neither listing states a maximum age, and neither publishes a policy for travelers with mobility impairments beyond what is already noted: The Wall is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, pregnant travelers or people over 200 lbs, and the Panorama flight is not suitable for pregnant travelers or anyone under 66 lbs (30 kg) or over 254 lbs (115 kg). Both note that wheelchair access is not available. If any of these limits are close to your situation, resolve it with the operator before paying rather than at the launch field.
