Lake Brienz And Iseltwald: A Day Trip From Lauterbrunnen

The Water And The Numbers

Lake Brienz runs about 14 km long and 2.8 km wide, with a maximum depth of 260 m. Its surface sits at 564 m above sea level, which puts it well below the high alpine lakes of the region but still well above the Swiss Plateau lowlands. The water is famous for its intense blue-green color, which comes from glacial rock flour carried in by the rivers that feed it.

Because the lake is deep and narrow, boat journeys along its length feel properly like cruising rather than crossing. It lies just east of Interlaken, and its western end brushes the flat Bödeli plain where Interlaken itself sits.

Villages On The Shore

Six villages ring the lake. Brienz sits on the north shore at the eastern end and is the largest of them. Bönigen lies at the western end, close to Interlaken.

Iseltwald is the only village on the south shore. Ringgenberg, Niederried and Oberried line the north shore between Bönigen and Brienz. Passenger boats have run on Lake Brienz since 1839, which makes the lake service one of the older scheduled boat operations in the country.

The standard route from Lauterbrunnen to Iseltwald takes 48 minutes with one change. You ride the Bernese Oberland Bahn train from Lauterbrunnen to Interlaken Ost, which is a direct ride of 22 minutes with no change. At Interlaken Ost you step off the train and onto a PostAuto bus that runs along the north side of the lake and around to Iseltwald on the south shore. That bus leg alone, from Interlaken Ost to Iseltwald, takes 12 minutes with no intermediate change. The whole trip, train then bus, comes in at 48 minutes on the current national timetable. No fixed point-to-point CHF fare is published for the rail portion, so the SBB app shows the current distance-based price on the day of travel.

The bus stop in Iseltwald sits close to the lakefront, so from the moment you step off you are within a short walk of the pier and the village center. If you are staying in Interlaken rather than Lauterbrunnen, your journey shortens to just that 12-minute direct bus from Interlaken Ost. There is a second way to arrive, and for many visitors it is the better one. BLS passenger boats serve Iseltwald from Interlaken, so you can ride the train to Interlaken Ost, walk to the boat landing, and cruise to Iseltwald by water. This is slower than the bus but it puts you on the lake itself, and the approach to Iseltwald from the water is the payoff. The boat is free for Swiss Travel Pass and GA travelcard holders and half price with a Half Fare Card. Some travelers do the trip as a loop, taking the bus one way and the boat the other, which gives you both the road view and the lake view without backtracking.

Twenty Seconds That Changed A Village

In 2019 a South Korean television crew came to Iseltwald and filmed a scene for the drama series Crash Landing on You, which aired from 2019 to 2020. The scene is roughly 20 seconds long. It shows the male lead playing a piano on the village's wooden lake pier while the female lead arrives by boat from Interlaken.

That is the entire premise of one of the most consequential film locations in Switzerland. The series became an international hit, and within months of its release the Iseltwald pier had become the most-visited film-tourism site in the whole country. Fans travel specifically to stand where the scene was shot.

On peak days in 2022 and 2023, the number of visitors to the pier exceeded the village's own population of about 415 by midday. For a settlement of a few hundred people on a quiet lakeshore, that scale of arrival reshaped daily life, and the village responded with the measure described below.

The CHF 5 Fee And Where The Money Goes

Since 2025, access to the wooden pier costs CHF 5, which is US$6.08. The fee applies to everyone who wants to walk out onto the pier, and there is no reservation system, you simply pay on site. The pier is otherwise open at all times.

The money raised is substantial: in 2024, even before the fee system described here was introduced in its current form, pier-related income came close to CHF 245,000, about US$297,700. The point of charging is to manage the flow of visitors and to make tourism pay something back to a community that absorbs the crowds. If you would rather skip the fee, you can still enjoy Iseltwald from the shore paths and the lake itself, and a BLS boat gives you a view of the pier from the water.

A satisfying pattern is to take the bus out in the morning, spend a couple of hours in the village and on the pier, then cruise back toward Interlaken by boat and connect to the train home. Iseltwald also rewards a slow look beyond the lakefront. The municipality covers 21.9 km2, the village sits at 566 m elevation, and it was first documented in 1146 under the name Isilibalt.

A peninsula with a former castle site, now a rehabilitation centre called Seeburg, juts into the lake near the village and is worth the short walk for the view back toward the houses. However you shape the day, it combines well with other stops around Interlaken or a trip toward Grindelwald.
